Another Case Of Blink And You'll Miss It

As I sat down with my friendly little laptop this evening, Jock sat down across the table from me. As his dad and Bug were both across the room asleep on the living room sofas, I've got to assume he was just bored and wanted someone to talk to.

Because the conversation? Full of random bits of nothingness. A series of disjointed thoughts just seemed to spew out of this child. For no apparent reason.

Jock: Mom, I think I hope Obama wins. It'd be cool.
Me: Really? Um, why is that?
Jock: Well, both presidents on 24 have been black, and they've really been cool.
Me: .......
Jock: Besides, the interview in Rolling Stone said that Hillary had already run out of steam and was all but done.
Me: I see. You think we should elect the next President based on Rolling Stone Magazine, and the common point of black presidents on 24? Really? That's your logic?
Jock: Well, do you have anything better?

Sadly, I had to admit I didn't. And? I'm beginning to believe that that is probably the closest I'm going to get to this season of 24 actually happening.

Looks like I'm over the whole "halfway to 70" thing. Apparently, I've felt this old for quite some time. Now? I'm freaking out about my kids.

It occurred to me this evening that my baby will hit the double digits this next birthday, and something about that fact makes him less of a baby to me. That is something I'm positive he would love to know. Which is exactly why I'm not going to be telling him that.

On the heels of that revelation came this one: Jock will be driving in One.Short.Year. Um, yeah. ONE YEAR. WTH?!?!?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Coach and I were watching the evening news the other night (an occurrence that reminded me exactly WHY I don't normally watch that particular program) when I happened to catch the tail end of one of their "general interest" stories. I heard this question:
What age is too young to start having sex? 14? 16? 18?
I piped up Hello?? 14 is way too young, thankyouverymuch!
Coach: You know you're saying that because he's only 14 (meaning Jock).
Me: Well, duh!
Coach: Well, what if he was 16?
Me: Well, then obviously 16 would be too young. Again, duh!
Isn't 24 too young too?
When it comes to our kids, any age is too young!!
When we learned that Shmoops was active, it was a huge "oh my God, my baby is having sex!" moment.
I think John and I just stared at each other for days wondering what the hell happened!
My kids are 3 and 1, 16 is too young! 18 is too young in my opinion! I see teenagers every single day and I have yet to meet one that is truly READY for that type of relationship!
Seriously...kids are too young to be that experienced!
30 is too young. *shudders at the thought of her baby having sex EVER*
Sadly, I think there are a lot of voters whose rationale for who they are going to vote for isn't any more solid than Jock's.
Thank God I had a son. Yes, I think it makes a difference. The laws are really amazing to me. You have to wait till you are 21 to drink beer but you can have sex at 12? Well, not legally, but you CAN!
If I had a daughter, I can't begin to know what I'd do. I'd be OCD'ing all the time and constantly spying and listening and all that...oh gosh. I couldn't deal with it.
You feel better? You have boys! :)
I'm with Burgh (big shocker). I was married before I had sex and will hold my son to those same values...although since he's going into the seminary, I don't have to worry about this at all.
The logic of 24 and Rolling Stone both frightens and intrigues me. I hope that isn't the way the younger set plans to vote. Just think about the 35 thing this way: you are just now old enough to actually run for president.
Hmmm, I don't think that will be a problem for my girls. They won't be having sex until their married. Nope. Forbidden. Perhaps they'll even be nuns.
:D
My Hunny is my one and only, till death do us part. I freak about my kids occasionally, and I know that they're people. But not people who are old enough to have sex! I'm looking into a chastity belt for Maybelline. And exterior bolt locks for my boys' bedroom doors. Seriously - 14? Nooooo!!! (runs screaming from the room)
Yeah, they'll always be too young. And what's that about them, the other way around, they can't stand to think that OLD people are young enough to do it either!
First of all...the president discussion was PRICELESS! Loved it.
Secondly...the sex thing. Ugh. Anything younger than the age of 20 is too young. Hell, anything younger than 25 is too young. I don't even want to THINK about the possibility of my girls having sex as teens. HELL NO.
I tell my daughter she's not dating until she's thirty.
I'm curious to know what channel you were watching, since we live in the same area. I could guess. :-) Or do you prefer not to watch the evening news in general (maybe I read the statement the wrong way). But there are certain channels that bug me.
There's no way I'm ready for my kids to cross that threshold. 18 is pushing it, in my opinion. But I hope that whatever they do, I'll know about it, and they'll feel they can talk to me about whatever important things happen in their lives, including THAT.
Apparently some of the things I say sink in (though many don't). I've told my kids that they shouldn't even think about marriage until they're 30, but it's been a long time since we had a conversation about it. So I was surprised (and delighted) a few weeks ago when the Girl said, "In 24 more years, I can get married, right?"
Heh.
I'm thinking "any time before marriage" is just too young. Yeah, call me old fashioned, but I firmly believe it.
I'm with Karen. Anything else scares the crap out of me.
And Jock's logic on the election? It's as good as any of the political analysts that I've heard lately!
