Shrinking Peanuts

Have you all seen the new (fairly?) M&M commercial, with the Yellow Peanut guy and the Red Regular guy stuck in the freezer? And when the store employee opens the door, letting them out, the Yellow guy remarks on the new, smaller size of his M? To which the Red guy says something to the effect of things getting smaller in the cold? (I tried to find a video of it, but no luck.)

We happened to catch that one on TV last night. Coach started cracking up when the Yellow guy remarked on his smaller M. Bug wanted to know what was so funny. Coach looked at me and we both started laughing. I mean, how do you explain "shrinkage" to your ten year old without laughing?

Coach: Well, Bug, when you get cold, things shrink up and get smaller, trying to get warm.
Bug: You mean, like my arms and legs and stuff? (here he shrunk his little body down, thinking he was being cute, I'm sure.)
Coach: .... (who at this point, couldn't talk 'cuz he was laughing. Why am I not surprised? These sort of discussions have ALWAYS been left to me, with both boys!!)
Me: No, baby. What Dad's talking about is your penis. (And yes, I said that. We've never been really into made up names, or vague references. For goodness sake, if the kid can't call it a penis by the time he's ten, how on earth is he going to be able to ask questions about jock itch or something during football season??)
Bug: WHAT?!?! (he was horrified.... completely horrified.... imagining that being sucked back up into his body, I guess)
Coach: Dude, it comes back when its warmer.
Bug: Whew! (**on a side note... how on earth do you type that particular sound and expression??)

And so now, we can't watch that commercial without laughing at Bug's reaction. I realize that most men will never find shrinkage an amusing topic, but from a parental standpoint?

Hilarious. Abso-freaking-lutely hilarious.

One more reason to be thankful I'm parenting boys. Somehow, I just don't think that would have been as funny with a daughter.

I think that is one you'll want to tell in the future. But, calling it a penis? I cannot do that.

IT COMES BACK WHEN IT'S WARMER?!?!?

WHEN?!?!?

I've been waiting almost 40 years for mine to come back.

I'm guessing it's just going to stay this way.

You are so right! Boys are much more hilarious! Though I can tell you that my girl, being raised with two brothers, gets most of that humor. Whats even funnier is watching the modest brother attempt to explain things to her after he's laughed at them. Heh.

You're right; the joke would be lost on a ten-year old girl. Mind you, I don't think a ten-year old boy fully understands just how vital a concept shrinkage can be. It is, after all, every man's excuse when he thinks he needs to explain his, uh, shortcomings. Funny how it can be 108 degrees outside and they still blame cold weather shrinkage. ;-)
