Weekend Randomness

Today was a long day. An extremely long day.

Today was the second day of baseball registrations. Remember this post? Today, we were there for six hours. Not really that long, right? Well, in that six hour time period, I must have said And did you READ the Parent Code of Conduct before you signed it? at least150 times. And I didn't start to keep track until after the first couple of hours. On the plus side, that means that registration numbers were good. Of course, it also means that I will now be having nightmares about that phrase.

Even more frightening, I'll be repeating this experience two more times in the next two weeks.

However, I am now a pro at calculating the difference between your real age and your "league age" based on your birth month and year.

The Redskins/Seahawks game was on today. Depending on your point of view, here's how it ended up.

The Seahawks game was awesome.

The Redskins game sucked.

Sadly, Coach was watching the Redskins game. He was not a happy man tonight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Coach and Bug had gone to bed tonight, I was able to spend some one-on-one time with Jock. He and I watched a movie together. It wasn't planned. In fact, he only meant to sit with me for a few minutes and then go on to bed himself. But, after flipping through the channels, checking the scores, he landed on Bridge to Terabithia. Have you ever seen that movie? We hadn't. I have to say, I LOVED IT. It felt to me like a spin on My Girl and Labyrinth.
We sat there, and got engrossed in the movie. Before I knew it, Jock had grabbed a sofa pillow and laid his head down in my lap. (That's his favorite cue to me to rub his head!) What started as a few minutes, turned into a couple of hours, just he and I. The best part? It wasn't a scary movie, or a violent action movie. It was basically a kid's movie. *spoiler alert!* At the point where the girl dies, I mentioned to Jock that when his uncle (my bull rider brother) was Jock's age, he had a friend that was killed in a car accident; and that the summer before my senior year in high school one of my very best friends was shot and killed in a convenience store robbery. He looked up and me and said, "Wow. And I thought it sucked just to move away from your friends." Gave him a whole new perspective on our move from Utah to Arizona a couple of years ago.
And yes, I cried. But I don't think he noticed. If he did, he didn't give me a hard time about it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Coach and I were talking earlier, about how the 80's couldn't have been that bad, as we've noticed they are starting to bring things back from that decade. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Transformers. American Gladiators. Knight Rider.

At which point, Bug cries from down the hall "The 80's SUCKED!!!"

Shocked and appalled to the tips of my toes, I had to ask him WHY he thought that, since he enjoys the music I listen to. His reply?

"That's where all the hippies ended up!"

I'm not sure even he has a clue what he was talking about. But we didn't stop giggling about it long enough to ask him before the moment had passed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With a Saturday like this one has been, wish me luck tomorrow. Between the laundry and the grocery store, I might not survive.
I think the too busy, I'm not sure where all the time went, is the theme for this past week. I'll just blame it on the new year. It sounds like you take snuggle time with Jock very seriously. And you should. You've done good Sports Mama.
Hope you get some rest today. You'll need it with baseball starting up.
I'm so glad you had that wonderful time with Jock. How sweet! And about the 80's, scary though they were, in retrospect I did have a good time growing up in them. But I must have missed the hippies. ;)
I didn't know that about hippies! The 80s didn't suck, it was just what I'd call the ugliest decade in the history of mankind. And I bought into it ALL. My hair was as big as a house and I wore electric blue mascara. Man, I was cool.
I love spending time one on one with my kids. What a great way for you guys to spend an evening!!
Kidzmama, at 14, he doesn't give me many opportunities any more! I take 'em where I can get 'em! :)
Karen, I missed those hippies, too! :)
Cecily, looking back at pictures of me then, I can't believe my hair! But yes, I did the blue mascara, too! :)
Snuggle time with a 14-year old is a pretty good sign that you're doing something right. I hope my kid still likes me enough for that kind of thing in 12 years!
BTW, please do share the Harrison story with your kids. He deserves all the credit in the world right now 'cuz I don't think anyone on planet Earth has worked as hard to get where they are as he has. He struggled through Econ, but he never gave up because he knew he had to finish it if he wanted to reach his goal.
Hallie, I've learned just to avoid mentioning his teams after they've dropped out of the running... lol.. And Jock loves the Patriots,so we'll still enjoy the rest of the season.
BB's Mom, thank you. Often, I don't look for signs that I'm doing anything right with these two. Especially when it feels like I'm doing it all wrong! And thanks for allowing me to share that story with them!
Haha. The hippies ended up in the 80s? Did you watch American Gladiators? It's still awful.
You need to get Jock to read BtT the book. It's just as good as the movie.
I'm sorry about the Redskins. Many games went awry this weekend.
Did you survive? I love the story of you and Jock and Terebithia. My 13 year old son still snuggles up and I love it, even though his hair is thick and coarse and I can't rub his head. :( And he usually smells like a 13 year old boy.
Have fun as a mom.
Just found your blog today, any women with the name SportsMama must be a kindred spirit! We had one basketball practice, one baseball practice, and one indoor soccer practice to drive to just today. And I only have 2 kids!
BTW, I am with hubby, Go Skins, what a TOUGH loss last week! UGH.
As for baseball registration I feel your pain!
