Random Bits From The Locker Room

Every night at bedtime, Bug and I have a ritual. I get him all tucked into bed, lay down next to him, and sing to him while I rub his back. Despite the fact that he's 10 1/2 years old, this is a hugely important ritual to him every night. He sleeps better when we don't skip it.

But last night, I went to bed before everyone else did. Bug came in to say goodnight, and laid down next to me. I asked him if maybe he'd want to sing to me? And in his little voice, he sang

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray. You'll never know, Mom, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away.

He gave me a kiss, an I love you!, and wandered out.

I really love that kid.

There are some things I've wondered about lately:

How bad does a headache have to get before you just give in and admit it's kicking your butt?

Is it possible to survive on beef ramen alone?

When all you want is to be invisible, and left to your own devices, why is it that THAT is the exact moment in your life when there is no escaping anyone or anything?

Why can't there be any nutritional value in popcorn? Especially popcorn slathered with movie theater butter?

When is someone going to show up on my doorstep with gooey, warm chocolate chip cookies and french vanilla ice cream? Or cold cookies and ice cream? Or even just one or the other?

Or combine them, and make it chocolate chip ice cream?

a couple comments. first on the bed time ritual. my daughters (twins) are 11 and they have always loved doing song, or story and back rub. unfortunately, i don't seem to have the energy to do it each and every night and i know i should but i don't. anyhow, they love it and it's funny that the song that your son sang to you is the one that i have sung to my daughters since they were in real beds. lately, however they also like it if we spoon one another and i shake my leg just enough to shake them a little bit. this started one night when one of them had a sore tummy and i told them that when my stomach doesn't feel good the light shaking makes it settle. so now they get a choice, back rub or the shakes! here's what i've been thinking about lately. when is someone gonna show up on my doorstep, with a bucket, broom and mop to clean my house. i would settle for cookies too though.

that is just too sweet for words!!!

1. when it hurts to take steps, that is when the headache has won.

2. I would totally show up on your doorstep with homemade cookies, if we lived nearby.

ooh, Raino's housekeeping fairies sound good to me too... I'd take them over cookies any day!

You're a good mom, only the two youngest (6 and 4) still get bedtime routines... the boys are all on their own - there's only so much patience in this body!

Please tell me you've taken something for the headache? Mine respond to Excedrin pretty well. They also respond to a facecloth, damp and heated, draped over the face.

Your Bug is just a doll. Keep him little like that forever, will ya? :)

I was thinking of you this morning. My Hunny has been melting down lately. Between the holidays and the new year and the cold weather, he's a mess. And then he started reading his book on grieving (dealing with some losses right now) and a ray of sunshine peeked through. *sigh* Life's long, but I love him. Here's hoping someone always gets in your face and loves you with all their strength when you just want to be left alone. :)

1. No more than a few hours.

2. Yes.

3. Just because.

4. Throw some gummy worms in there. Surely that will add nutritional value of some sort. Fruit, or something.

5. Any day now.
